One of the most important steps in your journey to find the ideal franchise opportunity is what’s known as validation. Validation refers to the process of interviewing franchisees who have bought into a concept that you have expressed interest in. It is during the validation process that you gain the most insight into whether a particular franchise opportunity is right for you.
The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) contains a list of every franchisee and, in most cases, contact information. You may choose to ask the franchisor for assistance in finding franchisees to speak to. However, it is strongly recommended that you seek out franchisees on your own.
The key to getting the most out of your conversation is to prepare a list of questions. In doing so, identify your goals. Is it important to learn about the day-to-day routine? About the experience with employees or customers? Perhaps understanding the role of the franchisor is necessary in helping you make a decision. These franchisees are busy, and you must be respectful of their time. You may not get all of your questions answered, so it is important to prioritise them.
Every franchise system will have a range of franchisees, High performers, those struggling and everything in between. Work to speak to franchisees that represent each section of the group. If you encounter a franchisee that is negative, perhaps explore that line of questioning with other franchisees to determine if it is a systemic problem or particular to that franchisee. Some people (franchisees) are just different (glass-half-full and those that are glass-half-empty), so try to see beyond the individual and focus on the specific issue rather than how the individual feels about it. Every franchise system will have franchisees that are negative and those that are positive so focus on the business not the people. The more franchisees you speak with, the better a snapshot you will have.
Top 10 Questions to Ask When Interviewing Franchisees:
1. What has been the most rewarding part of being a franchisee? What has been the most unexpected struggle?
How the franchisee responds to these questions will tell you a great deal about how closely expectations have been met.
2. What were you doing prior to being a franchisee?
Understanding a franchisee’s background may offer insight into what personality type and what skill set aligns with the franchise opportunity.
3. Was the training and assistance in opening your location provided by the franchisor adequate? What could they have done better?
One of the biggest benefits of buying a franchise is not doing it alone. For a good system, that starts before you are open for business. Ask the franchisee how prepared they felt once open and if there is anything they think should be added to the training.
4. How has the franchisor’s support been since you have been open for business? You want to know what the operational support is like but also how do they help with the changing face of business (labour costs, supply chain and COGs)
Most franchisors assign an employee, typically titled an area manager/business or operations consultant, to your location to periodically check in. This person’s job is twofold. One, to assist you with day-to-day operations, and two, to ensure you are abiding by the guidelines set forth by the franchisor. Ask the franchisee what kind of assistance he or she has provided. How often do they make a visit? All-in-all, does the franchisee feel properly supported? Does the franchisor have support staff with expertise to assist you in managing the costs of operating a business?
5. Is the franchisor accessible when you need them to be?
The area manager/business or operations consultant assistance comes with limitations, and so, someone from corporate will have to be contacted when concerns need to be escalated. Ask the franchisee what issues have arisen that led to them reaching out to a senior member of the franchisor team. Were they happy with the attention paid to their concern and its resolution? The last thing anyone wants is to feel as if their investment is not important to anyone outside of the corporate offices.
6. How many hours a week do you work? Is that more, less or about the same as you expected?
Many who become business owners do so because they want the flexibility that comes with owning your own business. Yet that doesn’t happen on day one. Most franchisees work a good number of hours in the first few years. Ask the franchisee if they feel the investment has provided a better work–life balance. If the answer is ‘no’, do they see that happening soon?
7. What assistance does the franchisor provide with marketing?
Franchisees bring a lot of skill to the table. Perhaps they have a strong sales or management background or experience in the field the franchisor concept specialises in. What many don’t have experience in is the marketing piece. All the grit and talent in the world won’t mean anything if you can’t drive traffic through your doors. Franchisors know this and work hard to help franchisees overcome it. Most have a designated marketing department that focuses on both national exposure and local-level marketing. Ask the franchisee if they are getting their money’s worth with regard to their contributions to the marketing fund. What local marketing efforts do they provide guidance with? How important is social media, and what tools do they recommend franchisees use?
8. Are you happy with the financial returns to date? Do you feel you are on your way to meeting all of your financial goals?
Your gut says to start out the conversation with ‘How much do you make?’ Don’t. That’s a very personal question, and one many franchisees may not be comfortable answering. Simply finding out how happy the franchisee is with their financial performance will say a great deal. If they are not happy, what do they attribute that to? Do they see themselves overcoming current challenges and ultimately hitting their goals? Who knows, you may find a franchisee or two who is very open with their financials and willing to share any and all details. However, you won’t find such a
franchisee if one of the first questions you ask is about money. Establish a rapport first. Make sure this question comes later in your conversation.
9. Do you have any advice for me as I continue with the exploration process?
What does the franchisee wish they did differently while doing their due diligence? Is there a question they wished they asked? Is there information they found out later that they felt was important to know before signing their agreement?
10. If you had to do it all over, would you make the investment again?
Just as with question no. 1, how the franchisee answers this question is very telling of their overall experience.
